Lead Trainer Nicole
Hello! I’m Nicole, the heart and soul behind Happy Hound. My journey into the world of dog training began when I was just eighteen. I decided to adopt a spirited boxer/greyhound mix puppy from a local shelter. I named her Bella, and she quickly became my best friend.
Bella embodied the joy of puppyhood—full of energy, curiosity, and love. But when Bella was around 10 months old, our world changed. A sudden attack from another dog at the park triggered a profound fear and reactivity within her. Suddenly, simple outings became fraught with anxiety, and I found myself grappling with feelings of helplessness as we both struggled to navigate this new reality.
Determined to help Bella regain her confidence, I took her with me to college, where we trained together in parks and cafes. While Bella was great with people, the sight of other dogs sent her into a frenzy of lunging, growling, and barking. I often thought that it would be impossible for her to ever coexist peacefully with other dogs.
A few years later, while working at an animal shelter, an opportunity arose that changed everything. A beagle puppy arrived, desperately in need of a foster home. Despite my fears, I decided to give this puppy—and Bella—a chance. The first interactions were anything but smooth; Bella was still reactive, and our journey was far from over.
However, I refused to give up. With guidance from a behavior vet at the shelter, I immersed myself in the principles of counter conditioning, socialization, and creating a neutral environment. Slowly but surely, Bella began to transform. I was amazed as she learned to relax in the presence of the puppy, allowing us to share spaces without anxiety. We celebrated milestone after milestone until the two could play together, sleep side by side, and build a friendship I had once thought impossible.
With each passing day, Bella grew more comfortable, and I knew we were on the right path. Inspired by her incredible progress, I adopted the little puppy that had become Bella's first true doggy friend. Together, they forged an unbreakable bond that taught Bella that not all dogs were to be feared. Their friendship blossomed, and soon we welcomed three more rescue mutts into our family. Bella now lives happily with her furry siblings, proving that the journey from fear to friendship is not only possible but also deeply rewarding.
If you had told my 18-year-old self that one day, Bella would not only overcome her fear of dogs but also thrive in a loving household with four other canine companions, I wouldn’t have believed it. My experiences have shaped my passion for dog training, and I’m committed to helping other pet owners navigate their unique journeys.
At Happy Hound, I blend my personal experiences with evidence-based techniques to empower you and your dog. My goal is to help you build a harmonious relationship that allows you both to enjoy life to the fullest. Whether you’re facing behavioral challenges or just want to strengthen your bond, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
Welcome to the Happy Hound family—let’s embark on this journey together!
